APPROVED FIRE STOP/FIRE CAULKING MATERIALS
Fire caulking or foam must have passed the ASTM E814 or UL 1479 and indicate this on the container
Tightly packed noncombustible mineral wool (Rock wool) can be used to fill in larger spaces
Traditional wood components and sheetrock
Rated Wall – PENETRATIONS
ALL Penetrations to fire/smoke barriers must be protected on both sides of the barrier.
Electrical boxes on both sides of a party wall must be individually protected as each box is a membrane penetration.
Putty Pads (Preferred Method)
5 sided “boxed” sheetrock
FLOOR, CEILING AND WALL PROTECTION REQUIREMENTS INCLUDING PENETRATIONS
Concealed spaces at the ceiling and floor levels must be protected
Concealed wall spaces protected with sheetrock every 10 feet measured horizontally
All caulking/foam must be tooled smooth and completely seal opening
ATTIC DRAFT STOPPING
Where required – attic must be subdivided into areas not exceeding 3,000 sf or two dwelling units, whichever is smaller

3/8” Plywood
Firestopping materials listed above are to be used to fill in small gaps around edges of draft stop
Attic access doors
Must be self-closing and self-latching
Labeling
4” Stencil reading “Draft stop – Do not penetrate”
Catwalk
¾” plywood landing required at all attic openings, must be installed on each side of opening
**Ensure to leave no openings large enough to let light through on the edges of the draft stop where it meets other structural members such as walls, joists, and any type ofpenetrationmust be protected on both sides.
